1) How do I clean things up... Remove accounts in my list that I don't really need (even though I used them in the past)? ie: I have a better name for a service I do or something should have been a Header account but it's a Detail account.
To clean things up, you have to back up your file and restore it, when you restore MYOB suggested a different name than the one that you have, accept it. Now you have 2 accounting files of your company, use the new company to do the clean up practice.
Assume that you use account 4-1000 for receipts from Company A. Since you have not done business with company A in the last few years and now you want to use 4-1000 for fees collected from company ZZ. All you have to do is going to account 4-1000 and change the name to ZZ.
Assume that you had posted the receipts from ZZ to account 4-9850, now you want to change it to 4-1000 to get it on top of your listing since ZZ is your biggest income account right now. Go to detail trial balance and change all of the classification of 4-9850 to 4-1000 and you have the ZZ income account listed on the top as you want to see.
Now, you want to use account 4-1000 as a title account for consulting fees. You go to the chart of account and change ZZ Income from 4-1000 to 4-1100, all of the Income from ZZ is summarized in account 4-1100. Next, you create a header account 4-1000 as Consulting Fees.
Try this if you see if my approach works. If it does, you have to save the old file that has the previous chart of account and you start working on the new file.
Regarding the back up business, it's is safer for you to have another back up at a different drive such as USB flash drive, or D instead of C that you have the file currently listed.
Hope that my understanding your question is correct.
