My gross sales on the P&L have never matched my gross sales on the sales tax summery reports for any period. It is not a cash vs accrual issue because I have tried all.

These 2 reports base their info on such different aspects it is not surprising they do not match.

The sales tax report will include the sales tax collected (not on P&L as it is in a liability account), but the sales tax report may not show all your sales depending on how they were entered and may not represent some forms of income or returns.
On the sales tax report you also want to customize to list only sales not purchases.

If you look at the sample widgets file you will see that it does not match in those reports either. You could go through the detail of each to find what is missing from one or the other and the reasons why, but they are kind of apples an oranges.
