The MYOB Mac Team has been working on speeding up AccountEdge Network Edition, and now the first phase of our two-phase speed enhancement is ready to go. They just released the 12.0.9A update for AccountEdge NE for Mac, and we've seen major performance improvements. Haven't seen a single "Retry" dialog since applying the update, pulling lists etc. is significantly faster, even with 4+ users. Kudos to the MYOB programmers--they're obviously on the right track!

My client has been running the 2006 version of AENE using a 1GHz eMac as the "server" (with no other user processes running). This afternoon we upgraded the network from 100Mb to Gigabit, replaced the eMac with a 1.6GHz Intel Mac mini, and upgraded to v2008 (with the 12.0.9 update). The speed difference is wonderful although I still do see about a 10 second delay in the initial list generation for the inventory (many thousands of items). Most other lists generate in just a few seconds.

However, I shouldn't be damning the upgrade with such faint praise as the improvement justifies the cost of the new mini, a few new drops, the new Gb switch and, of course, my time.

I should also mention that, at this point, it appears as though the Upgrade Assistant managed the upgrade of the data file without any issues and my client is seeing everything he expected to see. Even the upgraded custom invoice form prints perfectly.

As JLG opined, "they're obviously on the right track."

One thing that attracted us to MYOB was the cross platform ability. However, under a LAN using OSX & XP we are running into horrendous accessability problems. Set for TCP/IP - the file is hosted on OSX 10.5 Server. Accessing it on an XP machone it runs slow, but when we try to also access of a OSX 10.5 workstation it just locks everyone out. We have the right number of licenses etc. - just we end up having use the file one person at a time. Any ideas?

@david: I believe that the AE database is no longer cross-platform.

Speed comments:

I've installed AE v9 NZ at a client with 7 users (usually 3-4 concurrent) about 6 weeks ago; the client bought all new hardware and OS (10.5) for the purpose. Our experience has been as follows:
Reporting speed is hugely improved.
Transaction recording is still quite slow, but lists open much more quickly.
Annual rollover (Start new year) speed is extremely slow, even carrying out the process on the server in single user mode. We chose to purge data due to the lack of improved transaction performance.
Users regularly lose contact with the file, which necessitates everybody logging out.
The connect document regularly loses the plot and has to be re-created. ("Unable to locate file").
When connecting, we receive a "Not an MYOB file" message occasionally, which can only be resolved by renaming the file and re-creating the connect document.

We encourage users to log out of AE9 when they are not actually using the file, and not to hold sales/purchase invoicing screens open (ever).

Overall the upgrade has been a success, although not unqualified. One major incidental benefit of the new OS is that remote support using commercial services via the internet is now possible.
