Set the date on the computer to a date more than a year in advance, open the company file, will ask you to confirm, tell it you want to set it to read only.

How about going into the security tab of preferences and setting the-
Lock Period: Disallow Entries Prior To: 12/31/9999

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy in the future so no transactions can be recorded (MYOB does not accept any five digit year dates).

PS. the Lock Period idea would prevent any transactions from being recorded, but card data (names, address, etc) could be changed.

What about just making a copy of the books.myo file and rename it MyDiscardableBooks.myo. Then use that one for your "read only". If changes are made to them it won't matter since you are going to just throw away the "discardable" copy and make a new copy as needed.

You can also select your file in the Finder, select Get Info from the File menu, and click the "Locked" checkbox.

Unfortunately MYOB will not open a locked file.
